My mother taught me how to make pie crust today! This recipe creates a very flakey and tasty pie crust.

Ingredients

  • 1 1/3 cups flour

  • 1 1/2 teaspoon sugar (use fine if you have it)

  • 1/2 teaspoon table salt

  • 1/3 cup solid butter flavored shortening, diced and frozen

  • 1/4 cup butter cut into 1/2 inch cubes-keep chilled until ready to use

  • Approximately 4 Tbsp ice water

  • 1 teaspoon apple cider vinegar

Directions

  • Sift flour then measure 1 1/3 cups flour. Add to food processor along with sugar and salt. Pulse to mix.
  • Add frozen shortening and pulse 5 times. (Each pulse is about 2-3 seconds).
  • Add chilled butter and pulse 3 times.
  • Combine 3 Tbsp. water and vinegar.
  • With top on food processors, pulse and add the water all at once. Do not over pulse. Only run until the dough begins to come together.
  • Add the additional tbsp of water if needed.
  • Turn onto floured board and form a disk, but limit the amount of handling as much as possible.
  • Wrap in plastic wrap and refrigerate for 30 minutes.
  • After you roll out the dough and place in your pie dish, trim to 1 inch over the edge so you can fold the dough under and crimp the edges. Place in the freezer for 10 minutes before cooking.
  • Your pie crust is ready now for your favorite recipes! If you want to prebake the pie crust, pierce the crust with a fork, then bake in a 400 degree oven until lightly browned.
