minutesBy special request of my son, I am adding this recipe for cheeseburger pie. It is a little different then most of the recipes I have seen on the web. It is packed with flavor! It also makes great leftovers and freezes well for meals at a later date. If you are pressed for time, you can buy a premade pie crust or grab the pie crust under desserts on my blog which will give you a buttery flakey crust as the base.
Ingredients
1 pie crust
1 1/2 pounds ground beef
1/2 onion, chopped
2 cloves of garlic minced
2 cups marinara sauce or any type of red sauce
1 teaspoon Italian seasoning (feel free to add any fresh herbs in the meat
1/2 teaspoon salt and pepper, each
1/4 teaspoon red pepper flakes
2 cups shredded cheddar cheese
1/2 cup grated parmesan cheese
2 eggs
1 teaspoon dry mustard
1/2 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
Directions
- Preheat oven to 400 degrees.
- Heat skillet on high to medium high heat. Add 1 tbsp oil and then add ground meat and brown. Lower heat to medium and lower heat to medium. Add chopped onion and garlic and cook for another 3 minutes.
- Drain any additional fat. Add seasonings, sauce, salt and pepper. Taste for seasonings.
- In a separate bowl, combine, cheddar cheese and parmesan cheese, 2 lightly beaten eggs, Worcestershire sauce, dry mustard (you can use regular mustard if you don’t have dry) and combine together. I will sometimes add chopped fresh thyme.
- Line pie crust into pie dish. Put meat mixture into pie crust.
- Spread cheese mixture on top of the meat mixture.
- Place in oven at lowest rack setting for 30 – 40 minutes or until the top is lightly brown and bubbly and bottom crust looks lightly browned (if you are using a glass pie dish). If top begins to brown at the end of 30 minutes, lightly place a piece of foil on the top of the pie and allow the bottom to continue to bake.
Notes
- I like to bake my dish on the lowest rake setting. It helps to make sure the crust browns during cooking. If the exposed crust starts to brown before the dish is done, then you can loosely cover with foil while it finishes the baking process.
